Chinese medicine is a great treasure house. Over many centuries practitioners have created many treatments for disease for example, Acupuncture, Acupressure, Tui-na, Cupping therapy, Moxibustion, Qi gong and so on. The foot massage is an important component in the application of Acupressure/Tui-na.
The foot massage is also called reflexology. According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine the foot resembles a miniature human body.
Each group of cells of the foot functions in correspondence with human organ. In other words every organ, gland, and physiological feature has its counterpart in a reflex point in the foot. For this reason it is preferable to treat the whole person by treating the whole foot. By working on the reflection of the nerve end, has direct impact on cellular development. Its impact will multiply when reaching various human organs and adjusting their function such as digestion, growth, nervous reflection, and endocrine and hormone secretion. Treatment of the whole body through the feet is given to correct generalised imbalances as part of the complete reflexology session.
1. Consultation & treatment:
a) Before treatment the practitioner will explain what reflexology is and its actions.
b) Questions about health and disease (case history) will be asked to ascertain the
level of injury/disease and the patient's constitution.
c) This may be followed by an analysis of the patient's tongue.
The patient's pulse may also be taken. These two activities ascertain
the condition of internal organs.
2. The patient will be asked to remove their shoes and socks. The treatment is done in supine or seated. The practitioner will instruct the patient what the appropriate position is for the massage.
3. The patient may be covered with a cotton sheet then various hand and finger techniques will be performed to the reflex zones of the feet.
4. After the treatment the patient will be advised to increase their water intake to assist the kidney's in the clear out of toxins, which should last up to two days then a return to normal water consumption.
